Roy Orbison

De zanger-songwriter Roy Kelton Orbison werd op 23 april 1936 geboren in de plaats Vernon in de Amerikaanse staat Texas. Hij speelde gitaar en harmonica.

Zijn genre wordt wel getypeerd als country en rock. Veel van zijn liedjes ademen de sfeer uit van ballades. Thema’s in zijn oeuvre zijn onder meer dromen, eenzaamheid, de liefde.

De eerste single die hij uitbracht was “Up Town”. Het werd een bescheiden succes en bereikte plaats 72 in de Amerikaanse Billboard Top 100.

De opvolger kwam uit in 1960 en maakte van Roy Orbison een wereldster. Van het nummer “Only The Lonely” gingen ruim twee miljoen exemplaren over de toonbank.

Met Only The Lonly creëerde hij iets dat nog nooit eerder in de Rock-'n-Roll was gehoord, namelijk de dramatische rockballad.

Roy produceerde tijdloze klassiekers als "Running Scared", "Crying", "Blue Angel", "Falling", "Blue Bayou", "It's Over", "In Dreams" en "Oh, Pretty Woman.

De songs zijn volgens kenners van uitzonderlijke artistieke en muzikale kwaliteit en zijn stuk voor stuk meesterwerkjes.

Vaak rustig beginnend, bouwde Roy langzaam toe naar een climax die zowel in de arrangementen, de stem en teksten van hem tot uitdrukking werd gebracht.

De unieke stem van Orbison en de tijdloze composities van zijn songs hebben hem voor velen legendarisch gemaakt.

Roy maakte verschillende tragedies mee in zijn leven. In juni 1966, toen Roy en zijn vrouw Claudette op de motor naar huis reden, werd ze aangereden door een truck en ze was op slag dood.

Twee jaar later sloeg het noodlot voor Roy opnieuw toe. Bij een brand in zijn huis in Nashville vonden 2 van zijn 3 zoons de dood.

Roy Orbison overleed op 6 december 1988 aan een hartaanval in Nashville in de staat Tennessee. Hij staat sinds 1987 in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, en sinds 1989 in de Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Roy staat ook bekend onder de naam "The Big O".

Het begin: Michael Jackson en The Jackson 5 met Big Boy

De eerste single die uitkwam van de Jackson 5 was Big Boy, met op de achterkant You've Changed in 1968. Bij de aftiteling van de video staat zelfs dat het in 1967 gezongen werd.

Michael Joseph Jackson werd op 29 augustus 1958 geboren in de Amerikaanse plaats Gary in de staat Indiana. Hij was het zevende kind van staalarbeider Joseph Jackson.

De jonge Jackson vormde samen met zijn broer Jermaine "The Jackson Brothers". In 1966veranderde de groep in The Jackson 5, waarmee ze in 1968 een contract kregen bij Motown Records. Daarna startte hij als tiener een solocarrière.

Jackson stond al op zeer jeugdige leeftijd als lid van The Jackson Five met zijn broertjes op het podium.

De singles "I Want You Back", "ABC", "The Love You Save" en "I'll Be There" werden grote hits. "The Jackson 5", die hun naam later moesten veranderen in "The Jacksons", omdat ze van platenlabel wisselden, bleven bestaan tot 1984.

In het begin van de jaren '80 groeide Michael Jackson uit tot één van de grootste popsterren op het internationale podium. Zijn bijnaam luidde al snel “King of Pop”.

Ook is hij twee keer te vinden in de Amerikaanse "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame", een museum in Cleveland in de staat Ohio: als lid van de Jackson 5 sinds 1997 en als solo-artiest sinds 2001.

Op 25 juni 2009 werd Jackson rond het middaguur in zijn huis getroffen door een hartstilstand. Een medewerker van Jackson belde met het alarmnummer 911, daarbij meldend dat de zanger niet meer ademde.

Een team van brandweerlieden dat in de buurt was, probeerde hem in zijn woning te reanimeren. Jackson werd vervolgens in allerijl naar het UCLA Medical Center gebracht, op zes minuten afstand van het huis in Holmby Hills.

Vanaf 14:00 uur publiceerden steeds meer media via het internet over de ziekenhuisopname van Jackson.

Volgens een eerste verklaring van zijn vader Joe Jackson, die zich in Las Vegas bevond, had Jackson een hartaanval gehad en was hij er niet best aan toe.

Rond 15:20 uur meldden de Los Angeles Times en Associated Press op basis van een anonieme bron in het ziekenhuis dat Jackson zou zijn overleden.

Om 16:30 uur citeerde CNN de lijkschouwer van Los Angeles, die verklaarde dat het overlijden van Jackson om 14:26 uur was vastgesteld.

Gianna Nannini

De Italiaanse zangeres Gianna Nannini werd geboren op 14 juni 1956 in Siena. Ze studeerde piano in de stad Lucca en vervolgens muzikale compositie in Milaan.

Haar genre wordt wel getypeerd als rock, maar ze staat ook bekend om haar prachtige ballades.Verder speelt ze piano, gitaar en viool.

In 1986 kwam haar bekende lied Bello e impossibile uit. Met het lied I Maschi nam Nannini in 1987 deel aan het Wereldsongfestival, dat ze niet wist te winnen maar het nummer werd wel een enorme hit.

In 1990 zong ze samen met Edoardo Bennato het lied Un'estate Italiana, dat speciaal werd opgenomen voor het WK voetbal 1990 dat in Italië gehouden werd.

In 1994 studeerde Gianna ook nog eens af in de filosofie aan de universiteit van Sienna.

Gianna Nannini is een graag geziene gast op muziekfestivals, waar haar wervelende optredens steevast de harten van de toeschouwers weten te winnen.

Antony and the Johnsons

Antony and the Johnsons is een band uit de Verenigde Staten die is samengesteld rond de Britse zanger-componist Antony Hegarty. De muziek wordt wel New Weird America genoemd.

Antony and the Johnsons maakt vooral ballads en hun nummers worden wel omschreven als ‘kamermuziek’, vanwege het gebruik van strijkers en houtblazers.

De bijzondere falset van Antony is bepalend voor het geluid van Antony and the Johnsons. Ze braken in 2005 door met hun album I Am a Bird Now.

Eyeless in Gaza: New Risen en Still Air

Eyeless in Gaza is een duo dat bestaat uit de multi-instrumentalisten Martyn Bates en Peter Becker. Ze zijn afkomstig uit Groot-Brittannië en sinds 1980 vormen ze samen deze band.

Hun muziek wordt wel omschreven als rock en pop, maar ook als funk en een mengelmoes van folkloristische stijlen. Volgens muziekkenners ademt hun geluid een sfeer uit van mystiek en spiritualiteit.

De naam Eyeless in Gaza is ontleend aan het gelijknamige boek van Aldous Huxley. De teksten worden gekenmerkt door hun poëtische inslag en dichterlijke en melancholieke manier van voordracht.

Een aantal albums van Eyeless in Gaza zijn Photographs as Memories, Caught in Flux, Drumming the Beating Heart, Rust Red September.

Ondanks dat de groep niet tot de mainstream wordt gerekend, kennen ze een fanatieke schare trouwe fans, zoals Robvandam om het zo maar uit te drukken.

Deep Purple

Deep Purple is een Britse band die is gegroepeerd rond de grootmeester-gitarist Ritchie Blackmore en toetsenist Jon Lord.

Bij de band sloten zich Nick Simper aan als bassist en Ian Paice als drummer. Rod Evans werd bij de groep zanger.

De muziekstijl straat wel bekend als symfonische rock, maar wordt ook wel gerekend tot het genre van de hardrock. Daarnaast zijn veel liedjes van ze heel erg melodieus.

De groepsnaam zou zijn afgeleid van de jazzklassieker Deep Purple, het favoriete nummer van de moeder, of de grootmoeder van gitarist Ritchie Blackmore.

En antal zeer bekende nummers van de band zijn Hush, Black Night, Soldier Of Fortune, Smoke On The Water.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo: The Lion Sleeps Tonight

Het is misschien een beetje een ongebruikelijke uitvoering van het wereldberoemde liedje The Lion Sleeps Tonight maar het spreekt me erg aan en ik vind het leuk dat het komt van het continent van de leeuwen zelf.

Dit stukje muziek wordt vertolkt door Ladysmith Black Mambazo, een mannelijke zanggroep uit Zuid-Afrika. Deze groep werd in 1960 opgericht door Joseph Shabalala. Ze zijn verschillende keren in de prijzen gevallen en ontvingen onder meer drie Grammy Awards.

Veel bekendheid kregen ze doordat ze samen hebben gezongen met de muzikant Paul Simon op zijn album Graceland.

De groep vormt momenteel een reizende muziekacademie. Ze geven onderwijs aan mensen over Zuid-Afrika en de cultuur van dat land.

Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen is een rockzanger, gitarist en schrijver van liedjes. Hij werd geboren op 23 september 1949 in het Amerikaanse Long Branch in de staat New Jersey. Hij staat ook bekend onder de naam “The Boss”.

De vader van Bruce is van Iers-Nederlandse en zijn moeder van Italiaanse afkomst. Vanaf de jaren '60 speelde Springsteen in meerdere bands, waaronder The Castiles, Steel Mill en Dr. Zoom and The Sonic Boom.

Springsteens doorbraak kwam vooral na zijn derde album: Born to Run (augustus 1975).

In de herfst van 1993 nam Springsteen het nummer Streets of Philadelphia op, voor de soundtrack van de film Philadelphia. Het nummer werd in 1994 een top-10-hit en Springsteen ontving er een Oscar voor Beste Song en een Grammy voor.

Persoonlijk vind ik ook de video die verscheen bij zijn lied Streets of Philadelphia bijzonder smaakvol.

Het instrumentale Albatross



Fleetwood Mac is een Britse band die in 1967 werd opgericht door Peter Green (zang, gitaar en mondharmonica), Mick Fleetwood (drums), John McVie (bas) en Danny Kirwan (gitaar).

Aanvankelijk begon de formatie als bluesband, maar evolueerde in de loop der jaren tot een popgroep.

Eind 1974 vestigden de leden van de band zich in Californië. Met de komst van het duo Stevie Nicks en Lindsey Buckingham kreeg de groep een belangrijke nieuwe impuls.

De band is vooral bekend door hun songs als Go Your Own Way, Dreams, Everywhere, Sara, Little Lies en het instrumentale Albatross.

The Connells zijn een Amerikaanse band uit Raleigh, North Carolina. Ze maken een op de gitaar gebaseerde zogenoemde melodische powerpop. De muziek wordt ook wel omschreven als alternative rock, college rock, jangle pop, indie rock of Southern rock.

De band werd in 1984 opgericht door gitarist Mike Connell samen met zijn broer David Connell op bas. In de loop van de tijd ondergingen de Connells veel wisselingen van bandleden.

Momenteel geeft de groep slechts een handvol optredens per jaar, meestal in het zuiden van de Verenigde Staten. Dit gebeurt dan meestal bij benefietconcerten en muziekfestivals, maar voor deze gelegenheid zijn ze te vinden op mijn weblog.

Tindersticks is een Britse groep, die in 1992 werd opgericht. Kenmerkend voor de muziek van de band zijn de literaire, vaak mompelend voorgedragen teksten en de melancholische muzikale omlijsting.

De bandleden waren Marty Balin (gitaar, zang), Paul Kantner (zang, gitaar), Jorma Kaukonen (gitaar, zang), Signe Anderson (zang, werd later vervangen door Grace Slick), Jack Casady (bas, kwam in oktober 1965 bij de band), Spencer Dryden (drums, kwam in juni 1966 bij de band) en Grace Slick (zang, piano, werd in oktober 1966 de zangeres).

Tears for Fears werd opgericht in de vroege jaren tachtig. De groep bestaat uit het Britse duo Roland Orzabal en Curt Smith.

De naam van de groep is afgeleid van een therapie bedacht door Arthur Janov waarbij patiënten wordt aangemoedigd te schreeuwen, huilen en te slaan naar voorwerpen om hun gevoelens te uiten. Vandaar de naam "Tears for Fears".

Er zijn zeker nog twee video's van Epitaph op You Tube te vinden. In de ene productie staat het beeld op zwart en in de andere is er een schilderij van een gezicht zichtbaar met een gil waarin de versregels in beeld verschijnen.
